The Movie 21

The movie 21 premiering in theaters on March 28, 2008 was fanfuckingtastic. This movie is great, exactly what was expected from the trailer. It's based on the non-fiction book Bringing Down the House, which is a story of the real MIT blackjack team and there exploits during the early 90's in Vegas. Surprising part about this movie being based on a true story is that the movie really doesn't exaggerate or stretch the story like Hollywood usually does. It appears that in the book they took the Casino's for much more than in the movie.

Anyway the story is about an MIT brain that sacrificed fun to get where he is today. He needs to pay for Harvard Medical School and even being an absolute freaky genius doesn't secure him the 300,000 dollar scholarship that would pay for his Harvard tuition. So in his senior year at MIT he joins the MIT blackjack team along with his math professor to earn his tuition from Vegas. Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) plays the antagonist, a Vegas security agent/thug whose slowly being replaced by computer technology and not able to cope.

This movie allows viewers to see how a smart poor kid goes from being nobody to being a high roller in Vegas, going to the best clubs, staying in comped suites, partying with gorgeous women, and of course making a fuck-ton of cash.

Saw it yesterday. It was pretty damn good.

Don't get me wrong, they had a good basis, but really needed to refine their technique.

The point of knowing the count is so you know when your odds are good and bad, thus why the big bidders would only sit down when the deck was in there favor, so there was no reason to change the bet until they needed to leave, aka when the count begins to become shitty.

Yeah I know but the spotter is the only one that would need to track the count, seeing as the spotter signals the big bidder to leave when the count gets shitty.

Oooh, I see what you are saying. Back up I guess, in case one person loses count.

The spotter are there to signal the big bidder to come to the table clean house for as long as they can then leave when the deck is cold. The big bidders don't bet the same amount every time (they bet as much as they can as long as its safe), the spotter always bets the same amount which is the table minimum. The spotter stays in case the big bidder loses count and needs an update. The spotter can't inform you of the count constantly because you want as little contact with them as possible.

No the big bidder always bids high, and doesn't vary based on the count. That's the whole point of having a big bidder. If he varied with the count Morpheus would be able to tell and he'd go break his nose.

Yes, I am sorry if it was implied in my previous statement that he didn't always bid high. But he doesn't bid a fixed amount, he always bids an ass load of cash.

Right but the point is that there's no point in him learning how to count or keeping track of the count, right? So why would they make the really smart guy a big bidder, why not have the dumb asian bitch bid and have the smart guy count?

Because then it would be obvious you fool, Women don't have money, that stuff is reserved for people.

And it's better if the big bidder can do it himself so he doesn't have to have much contact with the spotter, if the asian chick kept losing count then she would have to completely rely on the guy.

i agree!!! the bitch was the only one who wore any disguises until the end. the entire movie i was wondering why they werent going to different casinos either. lame!

The big bidder can play the same table for hours, as long as the count stays high.

Blake seriously you keep missing my point. I understand the role of the big bidder. However, if the big bidder is signaled in and signaled out, and his bet while he is in doesn't vary based on the count, then there is no reason for him to keep track of the count. Understand?

His bet does vary on the count though. The higher the count, the higher your chances are to win, the more you are willing to bet. Also they weren't always signaled the deck was cold.

The reality of it is, the real MIT Blackjack Team used the spotter/big-player system. Although after the spotter signaled the big player the spotter would leave the table so there was a higher chance of the big player getting high cards.

But if he manipulates his bet he gets detected.

Not at all, betting the same would get you detected. People would be like "wtf this guy just shows up bets 3,000 grand then leaves." Then people from other casino that he gambled at would be like, "same thing happened to me! Lets kill that little bastard!"
